Most of the good photographs from last month came from standing still, not from walking further.

The instinct on a new track is to keep moving — there is always another lookout, and the light is always better somewhere ahead. It rarely works out that way. The frames worth keeping came from the twenty minutes spent waiting at a gully crossing while everyone else carried on.

Wildlife makes the point better than scenery does. Nothing comes out of the undergrowth while there is movement on the track. Sit down, stop rustling, and within a quarter of an hour the place starts behaving as though nobody is there.

The short version: walk less, wait longer. It is duller advice than most, and it is the only thing here that has consistently worked.
