A room that works well in January rarely works as well in June. The furniture has not moved, but the light has, and so has what the space is being asked to do. Planning for that shift costs less than rearranging around it later.
Start with the light
Note where the light falls at three points in the day before deciding where anything permanent goes. Fixed storage on the brightest wall is a decision that is expensive to reverse and easy to avoid.
Leave one surface empty
A single clear surface absorbs the overflow of whatever the season brings — projects, deliveries, half-finished work. Rooms without one push that overflow onto the floor.
Choose furniture that moves
Pieces on castors, tables that fold, shelving that can be rehung at a different height: none of these are more expensive than the fixed version, and all of them buy a second layout for free.
